There was contrast which was made of this term in the Middle Ages with divinity which is now referred to as classics. The humanities today are contrasted more frequently with physical, natural and at times with social science too as professional training (Compact Oxford English Dictionary of Current English: Third edition revised, 2008). As a discipline Humanities study the human and being and the products of their culture. These disciplines include history, anthropology, literature and language, political and philosophical science which are just a few of them. The central justification since the late 19th century for the humanities has been that it is an aid and an encouragement for self-reflection a self reflection which in turns helps with the development of consciousness that is personal or an active sense towards civic duties. The humanities attempt to differentiate itself from natural science was centered by Hans-Georg Gadamer and Wilhelm Dithey as an urge of human kind to understand experiences that it has had. They claimed that this understanding ties people who are like-minded from a cultural background that is similar together and provides with a sense of continuity with the culture with a past that is philosophical (Dilthey, Makkreel, Rodi, Dilthey, 2002). In the late 20th and early 21st centuries scholars extended the term narrative imagination (Von wright, 2002) to being an ability of understanding the record of the experience that was lived outside the context of an individuals own cultural and social context. It is claimed through that narrative imagination that humanities students and scholars develop a conscience that is suited more for the word multi cultures which we reside in (Menand, 2010). This conscience might take the form of being passive and which allows self-reflection or there might be an extension of it to active empathy which facilitates civic duties dispensation as a world citizen who responsible should be engaging in. However, there is disagreement which exists on the level in which humanities study influence an individual and whether the understanding which is produced in enterprises that are humanistic will be able to guarantee an effect on people which is identifiable positive. Recent developments on this subject have observed a rejection of the curriculum of English Language. It has been stated that there is contribution of English as a part of humanities to the historys erasure what it has been reflecting the tainted history which is their accurately. In which the art-making was dominated by the white-men for centuries rather than a woke history which is required. There are very few and almost arguably no female poets which are included in the curriculum who were there in Chaucers time and rival arguably the wit, texture, psychological insight or transgressiveness. This also includes art by people of color during, and such other minorities of the world in the history. Humanities as a course aims to develop, provoke and empower its scholars to think in a manner that is more critical and the recent questioning of the development of white-men basis literature is just an example of the same and reflects the vision of scholars of humanities to society which is inclusive, cooperative and responsible.
